Ever been to Kickastickalong?

Each week, we have a look at a slang word from Australian English. You can see other Aussie Word of the Week posts from the Macquarie Dictionary here.

This week, our word is Kickastickalong. Out the back of Bourke, there’s a town past Woop Woop known as Kickastickalong. Also known as Oodnagalahbi, Oodnawoopwoop or Bullamakanka, this is a town not much known for anything. In fact, the only entertainment is to kick a stick along the ground (do you see where this is going?).

Our Australian Word Map project also brought up Kickatinalong and Wheelabarrowback as alternative names for this fictional town.

These towns are all over the world, for example, while Timbuktu is a town in central Mali, it’s also used to describe somewhere out of the way. Do you know of any others?
