deep north

(sometimes caps) Far North Queensland. [modelled on the Deep South (of the United States), because of supposed conservative and racially intolerant attitudes.]

Contributor's comments: Also used in Melbourne to refer to Queensland in general when Joe Bjolkie-Petersen was in power. I first heard this term on the (US version) Today Show when they filmed some shows in Australia in 1987.
