bungarra

noun a large goanna, brownish in colour, commonly called Gould's goanna.
Contributor's comments: I have occasionally heard the name 'barney' used locally to describe a goanna (bungarra). Example: Indigenous neighbour's child commented that dad had buried the 'barney guts' in the garden.

Contributor's comments: The alternative word 'barney' is a word from the local Nyikina language and is spelled 'barniy' in the agreed and used Nyikina orthography. Just thought you might like to know. I am a linguist working with Nyikina speakers.
