any of a family of single-stranded RNA viruses, Retroviridae, containing reverse transcriptase, an enzyme which facilitates the transcriptions of RNA to DNA (the reverse of the more usual transcription of DNA to RNA), the newly transcribed DNA being incorporated into the host cell’s DNA and producing new RNA retroviruses; the family include the AIDS virus and a number of oncogene-carrying viruses suspected of inducing cancer.
