bay trout

noun a large sport fish, commonly called Australian salmon but actually a marine perch.

Contributor's comments: I think it is misleading to describe a bay trout as a large sport fish. Typically the weight would be between 1 and 3 kg. They are shoal fish, and sometimes large shoals come in to Port Phillip Bay. They are fished for eating, not for sport.

Contributor's comments: All the 60 plus chaps at our local pub use "bay trout" as a rhyming slang for GOUT! As in "Got the bloody bay trout again!!!"
