I went to primary school in Newport (3015) in the 50s and 60s and [some marbles were] called after their colours, there were birdcages (an internal net pattern) and americans (opaque with three colours).

Contributor's comments: I've used the term 'American' for three-colour marbles growing up in Sydney. One of the colours of the marble was always red, a dark colour in the middle, and a light colour on the other side.
