Word of the Year is nearly here!
Jan 05, 2015
The much anticipated annual Macquarie Dictionary Word of the Year is on the way. The editors are busy selecting final contenders from new words in 2014 that are being added to the Macquarie Dictionary Online.
Each year, we ask the public to vote on the new words that you like best. We also assemble a team of experts to debate on which word from 2014 they think is the most striking contribution to Australian English. The public vote determines the People's Choice winner and the committee determines the overall winner.
This year we are very excited that author, columnist and master of all things splodey John Birmingham has agreed to be part of the selection committee. Other members, from the University of Sydney, are Vice-Chancellor Michael Spence, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Stephen Garton, Director of Libraries Anne Bell, plus Catriona Menzies-Pike Arts Editor at The Conversation and, of course, The Editor, Susan Butler.
Voting opens on Monday 19 January. Last year’s winners were infovore and onesie… what will this year’s winners be?
Vote for words, win free books
Everyone who votes for their favourite words in the Macquarie Word of the Year will automatically be entered into the draw to win a fabulous book pack (there are 5 up for grabs) from Pan Macmillan Australia, which includes a signed copy of John Birmingham’s brand new novel Emergence, a signed copy of Susan Butler’s The Aitch Factor plus a copy of House of Karls, The Water Diviner and You Are Here.
Release your inner photographer
Budding photographers and wordsmiths alike, it's time to get your camera ready and start snapping some pictures. This year, not only do we want you to vote for your favourite words, but we're also asking you to send us photos that you think best depict these words.
We’ll be featuring daily photos on our Instagram account while Word of the Year is underway. Once voting has closed, The Editor will pick her favourites to be included on the website.
The photo comp also opens on Monday 19 January. Stay tuned for more details.
