Put on your daggiest duds you dag!

Put on your daggiest duds because we are exploring all things daggy in this week’s Aussie Word of the Week.

This has a pretty unpleasant etymology, as it was originally referring to dags of excrement that became stuck in sheep’s wool!

Nowadays, daggy means uncool, conservative, lacking style and sophistication. It can also mean you are dweebish, nerdy or geeky. Hence, you can wear your clothes daggily, in a daggy manner, or in a state of dagginess. Or you could just be a dag.

There are some regional differences in Australia when it comes to the words dag and daggy. In Queensland, daggy usually refers to fashion or people’s clothing choices, whereas in Melbourne it refers to people’s behaviour.

Each week, we have a look at a slang word from Australian English. You can see other Aussie Word of the Week posts from the Macquarie Dictionary here.
