Environment images in the dictionary
Photos taken as part of the OzPic project have been added to the online dictionary
Last year, Macquarie Dictionary and ABC Local Radio launched OzPic: Picturing the Australian Environment, a joint project which aimed to uncover some of the words we use to describe the Australian environment and to supplement the definition given in the dictionary with a photograph.
Macquarie has always tried to engage the general public in the process of creating the dictionary. So in that same way we have encouraged people to look around them and send in pictures that depict the Australian landscape (or an aspect of it) captured from regions across the country.
We received hundreds of submissions and after careful review, the editors have made a selection of photos that have now been added to the dictionary.
To see a list of all entries that now also have an image, download the PDF below.
Have you submitted a photo and want to know if it was selected for inclusion? Get in touch and we’ll let you know. Or, maybe you have some photos that you’d still like to submit? We’d love to see them.
Viewing images online
The images follow the definitions they are illustrating. An example of how to view the images is below. Simply click on the green camera icon to view the image. If there are multiple images for one definition, they will appear one below the other.
We are still collecting photos of the Australian environment. Any photos sent to us will be reviewed for possible inclusion in the dictionary online, plus they may be featured on our Instagram feed during the year! You can upload photos anytime.
